Business ethics is an applied ethics. It is a field that centers on ethical questions related to business settings. More specifically, it centers on questions about human action, human interaction and the consequences thereof (Dubbink, 2022, p. 21). Typical ethical questions that pertain to the hospitality industry are: ‘Is it morally justifiable to build a tourist resort when this implies that local residents have to move away?’ and ‘What are the limits of hospitality?’
Business ethics can roughly be divided into two parts. There is an academic discipline that focuses on reflection and discussion about ethical questions in business settings. This reflection and discussion can be traced to scientific journals and books. However, business ethics is also a management practice which involves how businesses concretely apply ethics by means of stakeholder management, ethics codes and ethics training.
